Fairlife’s chocolate (yum) and 2% reduced fat milk.
Last week I went to Wal-Mart over my lunch hour to get some snow pants so we could get some much needed fresh air. My list only had 3 items but somehow when I checked out, there were 18 in my cart. One of those was a carton of Fairlife chocolate milk (ultra-filtered cow’s milk with 50% more protein and 30% more calcium). Have you seen it in your grocery store?
Fairlife is a brand new product that you might have first heard about. Coca-Cola announced they were getting in the milk business. Fairlife is made from cow’s milk which I am all for, and you can read more about why here.
If you have never heard of Fair Oaks, I encourage you to check out their website and then plan a visit to their Dairy Adventure, Pig Adventure, or Fair Oaks Dairy Restaurant.
A look at the carton of the Fairlife’s chocolate milk.
What makes Fairlife different from your traditional milk is that it is ultra-filtered.
According to their website, the milk is run through their unique filtration system. The result is ultra-filtered milk with 50% more protein, 30% more calcium and half the sugar of regular milk and lactose free. Not to worry, Fairlife milk is pasteurized. The pasteurization process kills harmful bacteria, such as E. coli O157:H7, Listeria and Salmonella, that can be found in raw milk (milk that has not been pasteurized).
Wal-Mart had a 52 ounce carton priced at $3.99 and County Market had the same products priced at $4.29. I purchased a carton of chocolate and reduced fat (2%) white milk. The chocolate was really good and my co-workers agreed. One said it was delicious in her afternoon cafe mocha. The 2% was okay, definitely like the chocolate better. My husband described it as creamy, like a milk shake.
Would I purchase this product again, probably not but here’s why – the cost. Fairlife costs between $0.0767-$0.0825/ounce where as my traditional 2% store brand milk costs $0.028/ounce.
However, there are many reasons to buy Fairlife. The main one being the added protein (50%), calcium (30%), less sugar and no lactose. If you are consuming a protein rich diet, are looking to reduce the amount of sugar you consume, or have trouble with lactose then this product is for you! Fairlife is made from cow’s milk and gives you 9 essential nutrients, including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamins A, D and B12, riboflavin, and niacin (niacin equivalents).
Have you seen Fairlife in your grocery store yet? If so, have you tried it? Your thoughts?

I had a chance to try Fairlife at a meeting last year ans i actually thought the 2% tatsed pretty good- more like the whole milk I am used to…being lactose free and packing so much more calcium and protein and so little sugars it certainly makes all those ingredients on soy, almond, etc… beverages seem not worth it. 🙂

Being very interested in the higher protein and calcium I thought I would buy them and let my kids taste test them.
I bought the 2% and the chocolate milk. When I got home I had my children, ages 16, 7 & 8 taste test them side by side with the Organic Valley Milk they usually drink. They loved the chocolate milk but when I saw that Fairlife added sucrose a.k.a. Splenda, there was no way I was buying that for them to drink since I am not a fan of artificial sweeteners.
They thought the 2% was tasteless compared to the Organic Valley. So, we won’t be paying for the extra protein and buying this new milk.

Sucrose is regular table sugar. Sucralose is the artificial sweetener.

So how is replacing natural milk sugar, lactose, with refined white sugar, sucrose, better? Unless you are lactose intolerant why would you pay more for manipulated milk? If you want more protein just drink more milk and less soda!

I’m not a huge milk drinker, but may have to try it. I am going to visit Fair Oaks in a few weeks I’ll have to ask them more about it.
